Unrest

The Black Lives Matter movement is a movement that seeks to bring attention to situations that affect members of the Black community; most notably, police brutality and the killings of unarmed Black men and women. Unrest was written to honor the lives of some of the young men who have lost their lives for for simply living; for being Black. The young men referred to in Unrest are: Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis and Tamir Rice. Each of them has a different story and the music reflects that. Oscar Grant’s movement reflects the conversations, anxiety and intensity that took place leading to and following his death on the Bart Platform. Trayvon Martin’s movement reflects the rain, the pursuit and the struggle that took place before his death. Jordan Davis’ movement is loud and raucous, representative of the song “Beef” he was listening to before being killed. Tamir Rice’s movement is jovial and playful until interrupted my gunfire; similar to the way his life was abruptly taken.  This piece serves as a reminder that there is no rest and that we must continue in the battle for justice for Black lives!
